As the title suggests; please value and identify my fish. Unfortunately my new tank is too small for this big guy (or gal) and so I have to sell him on. He/she is about 3 inches long and 2-3 years old. It was sold to me as a Flying Fox but reading the species guide on this forum (and elsewhere) I am now pretty sure it is a Siamese Algae Eater. Also if it's possible, could someone sex my fish? Thank you.

I would say SAE and maybe a couple of quid. They're nothing special.

Nice pic though. :good:

I would say that is a Siamese algae eater (either Crossocheilus oblongus, or possibly one of the other Crossocheilus species).

I can't put a value on it; 'second hand' fish are usually worth very little, unless they're very rare or sought after (which yours isn't, unfortunately, although it's a handsome fish).

SAE aren't sexable.

Ah well I wasn't looking to make money anyway, I just think if someone is willing to pay for something they are more likely to look after it . Thanks guys.

Siamese Algae Eater is just another name for a Siamese Flying Fox (as oposed to a Flying Fox aka Indonesian or Indo Flying Fox).

I agree with the others, that is a very nice looking specimen. Maybe you could put it in the forum's classified? I'm sure someone would love to rehome it for you. At least if someone from the forum takes it, they probably have some interest in the fish's welfare.

Well it would not be a flying fox because they have 3 or 4 fins on their bottom side
SAE have the same number of fins as flying foxes (and, in fact, all fish); two paired (pectoral and ventral) and one single (anal).
