After finding out that my two 20 gallons are actually 10 gallons, I've been a bit paranoid about my supposed 55 gallon. It's a pentagonal tank, and three of the sides are 12.5 inches, two of the sides are 22 inches, and it's 23 inches high. I couldn't use the calculator, so does anyone have any idea? I didn't include the hood in the height, but there's about three inches of gravel.

EDIT: Sorry, double post. It wouldn't load so I had to refresh the browser.

I'm guessing but I think it's more like 35 gallons. Here's a link I used to guesstamate. http://alysta.com/books/fishtank.htm

If you are ambitious you can calculate the area of each side by assuming they are rectangles (length/width) and then subtracting the triangles on the sides that make it a hex. I made a little tutorial a while back. If I can find it in my previous posts I'll link you to it.

Ok, let me know of this link works. I'll help you in the process if you want. This particular person was looking for a hex tank volume, if it is the same shape then just apply the same rules and if it isn't, skew the math for your tank and you should be able to get it in a few calculations.

I hope this helps!

Errr... I'm confused

Well, if you could post up a picture or even a link to a picture of a tank with the same shape and then provide me with your measurements, based on that I can do some quick math for you and give you an estimate.

Sorry for picture quality and sloppy computer writing.

Definitely not a 55. Using the measurements you've given:

22*22*22 = 10648

22-12.5=9.5, 9.5*9.5*0.5*22=992.75

10648-992.75=9655.25 cubic inches

Which according to my unit converter is 158 litres or 41 gallons.

Its been a while since I worked out areas of shapes but you have:

2 sides at 22 inch and 3 sides at 12.5 inch, so to make it easier I would take away one of the 12.5 sides to make a rectangle and add 6.25 onto each of the lengths:

e.g. a rectangle of length 28.25* width 12.5* height 22

Which according to an on line volume calculator works out to: 127.3 litres or 33.6 US gallons.

I am by no means certain you can work it out that way, but that's my guess! :D

Coldcazzie is spot on. Its just a 22 inch cube with the corner cut off. It's definately 41 US gallons.

Sorry, just reread the post and had a quick google, what I posted before is wrong.

The above posters are right, assuming that the back three angles of the 'cube' are 90 degrees, if the angles are not 90 degrees then volume will change abit but probably not by a significant amount.
