THANK YOU! :good:

I was going to say hygrophila of some sort...

thanks.. after looking at various hygrophilia i've settled for Hygrophilia salicifolia (Willow leaf Hygro)

Anyone know if I'm ok just to chop halfway down the main stem and just replant it to propogate?

Hi people. I was hoping someone could shed some light on how to maintain this plant (willow leaf hygro). I could add a new picture to show you how out of control it currently is. Basically, after a rescape it lost a few leaves and now it has shot out LOTS of new roots from a third of the way up the stem. Would it be safe to just cut the top of the plant off and replant this? I only have one main plant (stem) and would like to have it spread out more. The plant has grown out of the water and it pressed up against the canopy lol

upon further inspection the plant has a few 'kids' growing around its base suggesting that it has propagated via runners. The main plant, which now needs cutting down as it is pressing against the bulb, has some smaller looking plants growing from the main stem that I may try and plant separately.

I'm pretty sure mine is the same plant. It does grow incredibly quickly and it's a great looking plant. I chopped mine down a few weeks ago and replanted the cuttings and they reached the surface a couple of weeks later. I've tried my luck with loads of plants and this has to be my favourite.

I have had this plant before but I recently ditched it after it seemed to be the only algae magnet in the tank.

To care for it? I didn't give it much thought at first but once it started sprouting life out of it I gave it some care and just trimmed the lower dead leaves off, gave it an iron tablet in the substrate. Literally that was it, nothing different from my other plants.

I noticed that once it got about 5cm or so away from the surface of the water it suddenly shot up within a day or so and protruded out almost wrapping it's leaves around my fluorescent bulb. It sprouted so many leaves above the surface and they were all healthy.

In the end though it's lower leaves attracted so much algae ( green spot I think ) and nothing else in the tank had it or on the glass and the flow was quite high over the plant, anyway I stripped off the infected leaves to the point the plant didn't look attractive and I removed it. Put it in a plastic bag for my girlfriend to have and she forgot, 2 weeks later I found the bag and the plant had continued growing.... no light/no warmth :|

Great thing about this plant is you can cut it anywhere on the stem and replant that and it will grow. Otherwise it tends to grow little shoots from the base on the substrate which once they've matured a little are suitable to separate and grow on their own.

Mine started from a tiny twig/trimming I was given, within a few months I had it about 60cm all with over 10 or so plantlets that I had given away to people.

well i'll get a new pic uploaded of it soon. May even sell a couple (cheap, just P&P cost) if theres much interest
