you cant have living rock in a fresh water tank
living rock is a salt water thing

right....

anyway, add some sand to a bucket full of tank water, and monitor the pH.
Most fish will acclimatise (sp) to a change in pH, but obviously you don't want to do it too quickly.

Many thanks i hope that i dose work as a few of my mates have got sand and it dosent seem to cause to much of a problem i just dont want to kill all my fish

Yeah i know i was a bitsuspect when they gave it to me at the shop but they said that it would act as a buffer fr the ph leveles so do you guys and girs think that sand is a bad idea

silica sand or play pit sand
are normally OK and don't alter
pH i don't think ocean rock is
that bad for changing pH either
not unless it tufa rock do the vinegar
test on the rock and see if it fizzes
if not its OK if it does its no good

Just wondering, what made you decide to switch to sand? Seems like after a while mots people switch to sand, and right now I'm currently starting off pretty much my first planted tank and can't decide whether to go with sand or gravel

I know i went to sand as some of the fish i wanted to keep peppered and panda cory's thrive of sand substrate. Plus i don't really know of any fish that it affects negatively. Also now having it in the tank i must say i prefer the aesthetics. I did want black sand but after calculating the cost of putting a layer in my 8ft tank i settled on argos play sand instead.
