This started with a fantail guppy who was getting chased and nipped by an aggressive younger guppy - his tail became a bit damaged but he seemed fine and I even thought it was healing. Then I noticed that there were red bits at the end of his tail (scabs?) -and a day later he was lying on the bottom of the tank, occasionally swimming with effort to another spot. I couldn't isolate him b/c the only ohter tank I've got is currently filled with swordtail fry... he died this morning.

At the same time I noticed that another guppy (very young - about 3 months old) was also having trouble swimming - he seemed to bob around about a lot then go "rest" on a plant leaf. He just died last night (the two deaths were within 24 hours of each other).

Last night I put INterpet 9 (Anti Internal Bacteria) in the tank - but today I've got another young guppy exhibiting the same bobbing behavior. He ate with the others this morning but seems to have trouble not sinking to the bottom. I've also got a few swordtails who are now looking "off" to me - one seems a bit wobbly when she swims and another is just hanging in the leaves in the back of the tank. One of my rosy tetras is suddenly looking very pale, too. This is horrible...

Any suggestions???? could the guppy with the damaged tail gotten a bacteria that he's now spread? The affected ones seem to have lost buoyancy or something.

Please - any advice would be appreciated.

Tank size - 156 litres

Temp - 78 f

External fluval filter

Water - Nitrite - 0 ppm
pH - highish at 7.4 - 7.6 but it's always like that
Ammonia - 0 ppm

There's 7 guppies of various ages, 5 swordtails, 3 rosy tetras and 4 neon tetras in the tank. Live plants too. No evidence of ich or slime or anything else external.

I do weekly water changes of about 25 - 30%.

help!?

Do you have a nitrite reading please.
Red edging to the tail is septicemia hard to cure once it advances, the bacteria from the fish can infect the others.
Swim bladder try some frozen peas, cook for a few minutes, let cool down, pop out of shell, mush between fingers and add to the tank.
Best to carry on with the bacterial med you are using.

Thanks, Wilder! I was really hoping I would get an answer.

Nitrite was 0ppm.

does the red edging/septicemia on the tail come from another fish nipping him?

Is swim bladder disease related to the bacterial infection?

thanks again for your help.
