When i picked him out of a malawi community tank he had lovely light blue and dark blue/purple stripes, when the staff picked him out with a net he went all yellow in the belly and is still quite yellow now 4 weeks later. i have no idea what type of cichlid he is or what the best thin to feed him is. please help!!!!!

I haven't got a clue what he is, by Malawi community, do you mean you got him from one of those "Mixed Africans" tanks? If so, it might be a hybrid of some sort.

As far as being stressed, what size tank do you have him in (dimensions please), what are his tank mates, feeding schedule and types, any chance of a full tank shot so we can see what kind of territories you have set up for him?

no i got him from a mixed malawi tank in the lfs

could he be a Tanganyikan cichlid, possibly a tropheus species?

They're pretty much the same thing.

Dave, you may be right, from looking at some of the Tropheus pics, he seems to have a similar body shape.

bishop, you might take a look at the different species in this link. It may take awhile, but you might find a match.

Also, without knowing the answer to the other questions I asking in my original post, another reason for the color change could just be the fish's adult coloration. There are quite a few cichlid species that change colors quite drastically once they reach sexual maturity.
