Please help with fish advice

That's a great page, I'll have to bookmark it. yes there are millions that's the hard thing. I am doing a Callichthyidae database on my site, that's taking ages and it's only one sub-group. Just so you don't have to search through for them, Cichlids would come under Perciformes. :)

KISS = Keep it simple stupid

Simple reference

Use family names and create a searchable system that can look up both common and scientific names.

Then on the page identifying each specific fish list the family, common, and scientific name along with references to other species that may be confused with this particular one.

Ok thanks everyone, I think im going to start at the beginning (running before I can stand up at the moment) Im going to start off with Common names, something that nearly everyone knows, so........

how about I start with the first list I had which some of you have already helped me ammend which will be the following:-

Catfish to include pleco's
Live Bearers to include mollies, platys, guppies, swordtails
Barbs
Cichlids to include Angels
Danios
Killifish
Tetras
Labrinth Fish??Bettas, gouramis etc,

So how does that sound? once done, I can work on the hard areas of scientific names etc. Doing it this way I dont want to offend anyone (aquamick) etc by not taking your advice as I am and I will, just think its easier to start at the beginning.

thanks

You're not offending me at all. :) You choose to do it whichever way you please. It's a great idea to use common names as the families would have taken ages.

Good luck with your CD :D

Moi? :p

Labyrinth fish is the correct spelling ;) You've missed rasboras! :p and what will sharks go under? (red tail black sharks, black sharks, rainbow sharks, ruby sharks etc.) I'd also add a miscellaneous section for all those fish that don't fit in like spiny eels or badis - you could puffers under this too. Oh, and you need rainbowfish...

For the L-Numbers look at planetcatfish.com Dont forget to ask them if you can use the info

Can we have a copy after its done? a download or sommit

Jon

Thanks everyone so far.

Ive just basically started doing the first section but will come back next week to let you know how its going and to talk about format etc. Also I may ask for pics of things like danios, barbs etc that people have and are willing to let me use (royalty free) for this project.

Of course once its done I will let you know and somehow upload it for downloads or be able to burn it to roms for the price of a blank cdr and first class stamp. Not doing it to sell or make money just because I have plenty of spare time at work so doing something usefull :)

thanks will be back soon

you missed out the all important section....oddballs!!! arowanas, lungfish, birchirs, knife fish, inverts!!
