Im trying to make a interactive cdrom with different types of fish etc on. One of the headings will be Tropical Fish and then within that I want different sections of tropical fish, so far I have

Catfish
Barbs
Angels
Betta's
Cichlids
Danios
Gourami
Guppies
Killifish
Mollies
Platys
Swordtails
Tetras
Pleco's

These will then be links to pictures of the different fish and details about them etc. Im only doing it coz I have loads of free time at work :)

Anyway is there any section you think ive missed or any that belong to the same category i.e. angels are classed as catfish (theyre not but you know what i mean)

Many thanks

Plecs are classed as catfish, and you could have Mollies, Guppies, Swordtails and Platies under Livebearers. Angels are Cichlids, and you could have Bettas and Gouramis under Labrinth Fish, for example.

Are you just doing freshwater? How about doing it using the family, Callichthyidae, Cichlidae etc.

Hope this helps. :)

thanks Aquamick thats great. Im going to be doing, tropical, marine, and hopefully plants but as I said, its work in progress and then see what happens ive just got so bored at work ive decided to do something in my spare time.

If I list fish under Labrinth fish etc how can I get a list of all the fish under that topic? I need to make sure the main headings are fine first before I work on sub headings and then the fish list.

Catfish inc pleco's
Live Bearers inc mollies, platys, guppies, swordtails
Barbs
Cichlids inc Angels
Danios
Killifish
Tetras
Labrinth Fish??Bettas, gouramis and???

Anything else? I was thinking of having a whole section under Plecos with all L Numbers, anyone know where to get a complete list of L Numbers and their names??

thanks

I would use family names but want it simple to understand and Im not sure many people would know the names like that, they would simply just look for neons etc. Also what would corydors (sp) come under, are they classed as catfish even though their not big??

thanks

Danios and barbs belong to the family of Cyprinids

Labyrinth fishes also include snakeheads and perches. And yes, cories do belong under catfish.

P.T.

There's a book called all L-Nummern, also published in English.

How about listing them like this, I'm using Corydoras rabauti as an example:

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Actinopterygii (Ray-Finned Fish)
Order: Siluriformes (Catfish)
Family: Callichthyidae (Aspidoras, Brochis, Callichthys, Corydoras, Dianema, Hoplosternum, Lepthoplosternum, Megalechis, Scleromystax)
Genus: Corydoras
Species: rabauti

Warning, this would take ages. it might be better to cut it down a bit, just using Order, Family, Genus, Species.

Corydoras are certainly catfish.
HTH

EDIT: Whoops, forgot the italics, and PT got in before me on the Corys :*)

ok this suddenly seems to be complicated lol

So what your saying is main page heading would be Order then sub page would be family and a list of species in that family? then break down to lower page which would be Genus and then a list withing that area which will be actual fish and then that link would take you to details and pic of that fish am i correct????

If so where can I fish a breakdown of all these different headings that I will need?

BUT.... Also if I did it that way, then how is a newbie going to know which section their little baby zebra danio is in? Im thinking of cross referencing some how but you see what im getting at?

Thanks Phantom, see forgot about snakeheads and stuff, so where would puffers fit in?

Yes, you could have Siluriformes, then under that Callichthyidae, Loricariidae etc, then if you went into one of those, eg Callichthyidae, you would find a list of Aspidoras, Brochis etc.

That's why it would take so long. I'm sure you could devise a simpler method. :)

Yes, I see exactly. perhaps you could have a search feature...?

ok then, start me off under the very first heading "Tropical Fish Area" what are those latin? names for the different sections, I will then see what I can find under google for their sub pages but will come bag if I get lost in the world wide web lol

so Siluriformes and ?????

I'm sorry, I'm not sure of the majority, perhaps you could search Fishbase, you can browse the different orders and families for all their contents, it's great.

Hope my info so far has helped. :)

Divide the 'index' into two types, one with scientific names, one with common names, similar to planet catfish's cat-elog. Puffers would be under some other family, i dare not guess which. It's going to take you ages, and will be very difficult considering the thousands of species of fish out there, unless you do just the more common ones.

There are a few good websites with lots of fish profiles, but it eludes my memory at the moment :grr:

P.T.

edit: dang, my turn to lose out to the others :*)
