Hi All

Since yesterday my dwarf gourami (male) is not well. I think the heat may have something to do with it - I am currently unable to keep the temperature of the tank below 29 degrees which I know is too hot. I've done water changes but the temp just goes back up and I am away from home all day. I have all curtains closed to block out the sunlight in the day but the temperature in the room is still too high.

All other fish in the tank seem fine though - I have 3 x neon tetra, 4 x harlequin rasbora and 2 x dwarf gourami (female) also.

The male gourami is just led on its side at the bottom of the tank and has almost no colour in him, it's faded to almost white along his body, and it's not eating when I put food at the top of the tank obviously - it may be picking up the odd scrap from the bottom but he's hardly moved at all.

Does anyone know what may be the problem? He's about 2.5-3 years old, and I don't know if it's just a bit of old age in conjunction with the high heat and he can't cope? I'm guessing he's on the bottom of the tank because it'll be cooler at the bottom? The other fish don't show any signs of being affected by the heat, swimming actively and eating fine.

Any help much appreciated. I don't have a quarantine tank unfortunately. How long do I let it go on before doing something?

You could try putting some bottles of cold water in the tank to cool it down.

I'll try that, thanks. If that doesn't help him out, how long do I leave him suffering?

Sorry to hear about that mate. My betta died during the heat with exactly the same symptoms.  The temperatures in his tank reached 31-32 degrees and I just didn't manage to keep it down consistently.

Sorry to hear that snazy. So frustrating when there's nothing you can do - away from home all day so stuck really.

Funnily enough when buying fish in England I NEVER thought they would be dying from excess heat!!
