Please Help, Not Having Much Luck With My 20 Ltr Tank :( :(

Yes, barbs do tend to be very greedy. For the moment, you might find it's best to overfeed the tank, so that everyone gets something, but only if you can do a big water change an hour or two later.

Ah I see ok, thank you, how will I know if the frogs and bottom feeder has got anything? That sounds like a really daft question I know but I'm really worried about them! Will it be ok changing the water so often?

You'll just have to feed them at a time when you can sit next to the tank and watch!

Water changes are good; as long as the water is temperature matched and dechlorinated, they will not harm your fish.

The only time water changes can be bad is if the tank is very old and neglected, in which case it can shock the fish, as they've grown used to the poor water conditions that have built up gradually. It's called 'old tank syndrome'; and is obviously not going to be relevant to your situation!

Ok, your so good at this by the way haha! Just two more questions for you and then il leave you alone haha!
Do I keep feeding until I see the frogs eat.... Iv put more food in and that barb just isn't giving in, so I put some more in and the frogs are just crawling past speckles that have got to the bottom of the tank.

Also my mum in law is giving me her fish tank, but she doesn't know how many litres it is, she knows the measurements, but it needs a new filter and I wanna get it right, I don't really know where to start

Hmmm...

could you; hold the food in your fingers, near the frogs? Or remove them to another container until they've eaten? Or hold the barb in another container or a net for a little while? A bucket or large (clean!) margarine or ice cream tub would do, it'll only be for half an hour or so. You won't need to do it every day; two or three time week should be often enough.

If you tell us the measurements, we can work out the volume, or you can do it yourself here; http://www.fishforums.net/aquarium-calculator.htm

Never listen to the people at your local fish shop again. Shame on them!

People here will help you straighten things out and guide you how to start your new aquarium up properly and safely when you get it.

some very good advice has been given by other members,i myself am one of the old time fish keepers, but the secrets of successful fish keeping is to have patience, good filteration, and airation, and do part water changes once a week or once every two weeks using a dehlorinator in the right measures, all tanks go through the cloudy stage for a few days (mine did and also my daughters tanks when i set it up for them, two of our daughters have aquariums and i have set them both up) but it will clear.i have always cycled a tank with just 2 fish to start with (after leaving the tank to settle down for a couple of days)..this will get the good bacteria to start working over a couple of weeks, whether its an under gravel filter or internal filter,i have always run my tanks on under gravel filters without any problems,my live plants grow like wild fire.and i have been doing this since 1973 using air pumps to drive the under gravel filters although i now use powerheads.as i said i have been using this method since 1973 and it works for me.so good luck and happy fish keeping.

Put some food in for the barbs and whilst they are feasting, grab some more food and drag it under water and let go of it near the bottom... Hopefully the barbs won't see and your frogs will get some! :)

One thing to mention is frogs are basically blind and eat by smell, a lot of them from what I've read wont eat normal flake (including mine) and require either frozen bloodworm/frog food... you also have to be careful that the other fish are distracted with the flake before you put the frogs food next to them on the bottom!

I just remembered a tip I heard someone share on the board once but never tried. They suggested feeding sinking food through a straw or tube... that way you can have the tube go right to the bottom and drop the food down without the fish seeing it sinking. Maybe something like that could work for your frogs.

As for the new tank off your mother-in-law get the measurements then there is a calculator on this site or there was that will tell you how many liters/gals it is.
When you do get the tank take your time setting it up and you could use some of the filter media from your existing filter to speed up the cycle when you get a new filter, make sure you get a filter that can cope with the amount of water in the new tank as well.
