Please Help My Dads Fish

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

If the fish look like there sprinkled in salt it's whitespot.
You will need a whitespot med.
Check in the instuctions that you can use the full dose with the fish you keep.
Remove black carbon from filter if you use it.
Raise temp to 30.
Increase aeration as the high temp and med reduce 02 in the water.

tank size 165 L

Red Platy

3 white spots on back slightly raised and one on fin at base.

will get dad to water tests temp at 27-28oC 2 days old bought from tri-mar.

any ideas on this

The tanks not 2 days old is it.
Take a sample of your water to the lfs and ask them to write the readings down for you.

Are the spots the size of a grain of salt.

A pic of whitespot. The spots look bigger in the pic.

Ok you need to get a whitespot med if you don't have one.

Api are a good cheap liquid test kit. The only test kit not very good in api is the nitrate one. So I buy a tetra brand nitrate liquid test kit.
Don't buy test strip cards they are not very accurate.

will let him know what he needs. one more thing hes just said to me. on of his fish has started to turn up towards the surface and shakes. the fish is dalmatian molly more silver than black.
is this normal. he thinks he might have a problem.

PH: 7.2
AMMONIA: <0.02
NITRITE: 0
NITRATE: 5.0

HE HAS TOLD ME THIS MORNING THAT THE SPOTS HAVE MOVE STILL ONLY 4 BUT MOVED.

SHOULD HE STILL TREAT THE TANK

If the spots have moved it sounds like whitespot. Parasites move on the body of the fish.

Is the molly laboured breathing.
Get you some info to the shimmies.

Shimmies

Symptoms:

This disease is named for the curious behavior seen in afflicted fish. Fish will swim with an odd, shimmying movement of the body. If left untreated, the afflicted fish will become unable to swim and will sit on the bottom, listlessly shimmying. This disease affects mostly livebearers, and particularly Mollies.

Cause:

Cause unkown but may be due to a variety of numerous pathogens, including protozoan, bacterial, and fungal.

Treatment:

Isolate the fish in a hospital tank and increase the temperature to 85°F (27°C). Treat with a broad spectrum antibiotic. Also ensure that the water chemistry is within acceptable ranges. Livebearers' should always be kept in water that has a pH of 7.8 - 8.3 and a hardness of 15°DH+.

how do you test the hardness of the water.

my dad and i have no idea on that.

only have one tank
i have one but not yet finished the cycle

only dalmatian molly doing this shake thing :(

white spot is being treated as we speak

thanks for your help so far.
ricky

When you buy a liqid test kit for hardness just follow the leaflet instructions.
It's that long since I tested for hardness I've forgot.

Anymore problems get back to the board.
Good Luck.
