Hi All
Iv just aquired a new fish,an apistogramma of some kind I think.
Iv search every where on the net and cant find a picture that matches it.
the picture doesnt do it justice as there is alot of red in its tail.
If you know its latin and or common name I would be very greatful.
Thanks
Si

its not an apistogramma of any kind so i hope you wasn't wishing it was?
its a brown spike tailed paradise fish (Pseudosphromenus dayi).
look it up and information on the fish, if you was prepared for an apisto then maybe you should take it back or make some alterations as their maintenance is quite different to that of the apistogramma species.

Hi dave
Thanks for that.Iv just google'd Pseudosphromenus dayi and you are spot on.
I was sold it as an apistogramma and had my doubts.
I only got it for my large community tank and only because I liked it so Im not bothered.
As it turns out my tank is ideal for him ie large, low current, heavily planted etc
Thanks again
Si

what else do you have?
they are very nice fish but get really boisterous, im not exaggerating either. they really chase and can cause enough stress to kill other fish.
as long as you keep an eye on it, and you are happy with it then no reason to be too bothered about the purchase.

Hi Dave
My tank is a 220Ltr comunity tank, heavily planted and very under stocked with small fish.
Iv got several types of fresh water goby, pencil fish, amano shrimp, pigmy gourami
A bulldog plec and a few others.
I have to say he is the most placid and inquisitive fish in the tank.
I only wish I could have more but without knowing its sex thats not an option.

i would guess yours is a male but looks quite young, they are very hard to sex compared to most other fish, the males, once matured, will show slightly brighter colouration and especially the orange colour around the throat area of the fish, the male will also have slightly longer extensions to the caudal fin. you would probably have to have a group, in which the males would show their colours to other males and to attract a female, in these circumstances the males would stand out slightly more obviously.

Hello again Dave
Thanks for the info.I will wait for him to grow on abit before guessing what sex he/she is.
Thank you again for all your help
