My brother is starting an aquarium and would like some advice on his potential stocking. He has a 40 gallon with built in external cannister filter. I dont think he will be over stocked (comes out at about 48" of adult fish) but I wasnt sure about the mix of the following fish:

Tiger barbs x 6
Angel x 2
Cardinals x 6
Starlight Bristlenose Pleco x 1

I wasnt sure whether the angels would eat the tetras or get niped by the barbs? Although cardinals are bigger tetras...

Any thought gratefully accepted! :good:

Hi,
The Barbs will nip the Angles & they will proberly eat the tetras as they get bigger. How deep is the tank? Angles need 18"

Hope this helps

tiger barbs really are a pain they will nip an angel fish and maybe kill it as said above the tetras will at one time become food fo either the barbs or the angels in turn

is it his first tank or not is he open to suggestions?

yeah he is def open to suggestions, thats why he asked me. This confirms my concerns ... Tiger Barbs do seem more hassle than they are worth!

I think Angels are on his list and the plec so any suggestions based around that would be cool! :)

you need to concider that angels r cichlids and as such have a "cichlids" attitude they can be aggressive in there own right, obviously anything that will nip fins is out corydoras cats are always nice and clean up any food that u happen to of over fed rather well but they cant have any sharp gravel or the like for substrate, also they need to be kept in groups some ppl say 3 others 4 but as many as u feel you could fit in really get 6 IMO and u cant go wrong :).

i get the feeling he would like a shoal of fish from the tetras and barbs mentioned? but with no fin nippers your a bit more limited and even more limiet with things tat the angels wont bother IMO. id have a read up on red eye tetras if i were him to big for the angels to eat and a very nice looking shoaling fish although many ppl say they will nip fins my dads have never touched any angel fish he ever had :good:

It's the barbs that seem the only problem really- so why not keep the general idea of barbs but have a quieter species, like pentazona barbs. Golden barbs may be alright too but don't quote me on that.

Remove the tiger barbs now. or remove the angel and bring something suitable for the tank with ur barbs and other fish instead of the angel.

tiger barbs are a no... I suggest some striped talking cats (platydoras costatus) as they are very amusing to me... just make sure you have loads of hiding spaces...

Yup, I'd go with Pentazona Barbs. If your brother likes the look of Tiger Barbs, I don't think he'd be disappointed with Pentazonas. It would be a much happier tank, too. I keep my Pentazonas with Cardinals.
