I think the LFS gave me 2 female kribs... just wanted to confirm before I return them. (1 of them doesn't have much pink on its belly as it is being bullied by the other but does get a pink belly when away from the other).

Also is this a female cockatoo cichlid...?

And is this the male...?

Sorry for poor picture quality but just took them quickly and they were moving a lot!

Thanks :good:

damn camera phones. I can barely see the pics :)

the top pic looks like a pair of kribs or suboccelatus (a type of krib). Male kribs develop a pointed tail and grow bigger than the females that have a rounded tail and the pink belly. The female is probably picking on him because he is a wimp. She might have had her eye on a bigger male in the tank but you got the smaller one. She will accept him soon and they will be happy.

The bottom pic is a male cockatoo cichlid (Apistogramma cacatuoides). The female fish above could be any number of species but if it is being sold as a cockatoo cichlid then it will be. Quite a few female Apistogrammas look like that. If she is in the same tank as the male then she will be the same species.
The male looks like a double red. They are a really nice fish to keep. Peaceful and easy to breed.

You've got quite a few cichlids in your setup now. How are they all with eachother - all going well?

ok kribs i would have to say female left / male to the right of picture....
last picture looks like a male cockatoo<diff picture but id go with female cockatoo aswell,,,,,what else do you have?

It's really hard to tell because the "female" if that's what you all agree is nipping his tail and so it has no real shape, and he doesn't have too much colour at the moment as i said because I think he's getting a little stressed. Well I'm glad I got a pair in the end then and hopefully she'll stop being so mean to him.

And Colin, it was taken with a digital SLR not a camera phone so only the photographer to blame!!

I now have 2 Angels, 3 Cockatoos, 2 Bolivian Rams and 2 Kribs so have def. decided to turn my tank into a cichlid tank, I may even return some of my other fish when the cichlids get bigger. They are all getting on really well, my kribs are a little "boistrous" (to put it nicely) with the corys but that's only when the corys have a wafer and there's enough of them that they fight the kribs off.

All cichlids are still juvies so I'm not sure how things will end up but i guess i can always return them..... or buy a bigger tank!!! ;)

Thanks for the advice guys, really glad i haven't just bought a bunch of males or something!

I've had one female that's killed two males i added to the tank.It just bullied them to death. She's one tough krib.I'm not risking another male...and i'll stop feeding her steroids too :p

Afer hearing so much about your tank I'd love to see a full tank shot, LolaLouie!

<<< Newbie but still would throw a guess that Colin was using sarcasm? lol :p

Iam a newbie but does it seem that tank is overstocked Iam just wondering because everyones always going on about overstocked tank and Iam trying to learn.

Pat, stocking depends very much on the care the fish are given. For some people overstocked is when they have any fish at all because they just don't care for them well enough but others can get away with a lot because they change the water every day! I would not pass judgement for the OP but in my house with the way I filter I would call it overstocked, and the hillstream loaches do not belong.

I'm always terrible at telling sarcasm when things are typed! That being said, my husband keeps such a straight face when he's joking I often take his sarcasm for seriousness as well!

I know about the hill stream loach but my LFS was selling them as tropical and had been keeping them in a tropical tank so I figured what's the harm. I also try and keep my tank at a lower temp for them but at the end of the day it's either I buy them and at least keep them in a clean healthy tank or someone else buys them and put them in their tropical tank without doing any research on them. I did also try moving them to another tank but the things are impossible to catch.

As for the overstocking. Right now I'm def not overstocked as all my cichlids are juvies and my filter has a capacity far higher than necessary for the tank. If when they get older i feel they need more room I will move the tank around but for now everyone has plenty of room and there are no fights and water parameters are in order which is all that matters when considering stocking!

Oh and Larissa here's my tank.... (it's not looking its best right now as I just changed from gravel to sand and haven't really put it back together properly!!)

Your tank is looking wonderful. I love the sand - much better than gravel. I'm thinking I should change mine over to sand too. I will have to once I convert it into a shellie tank but I think I should do it before then.
