Hello I would like to do up my new tank very nicely with plants such as a carpet of riccia in places.

I have a few questions:
  1. Would riccia survive with a pleco?
  2. The article mentions CO2 systems and I've seen this before - how much does it improve plant growth, and how expensive are the systems? Do they harm anything else in the tank I.E reduce the amount of oxygen in the tank for fish to breathe.
Thankyou!

EDIT - Just read the sticky (doh!)

Could someone work out my WPG as it says I might not need CO2 depending on that.

"Your tank's volume is approximately 6912 cubic inches or 29.92 U.S. gallons, which is approximately 116.4 liters."

And the light tube I will have in there is 25W.

Do you need to know anything more?

you have less then 1 watt per gallon which is very low and ricca will need at least twice that to even survie

but you can upgrade your ligthing that will give you more opions on plants and then if you get more then 2

wpg co2 systems cost like 25 dollars for a dry yeast and suger mix all the way up to 150 dollars for

pressurized. and i would think pleco would mess upp the ricca big time soo whatch out if you do.

Search is ur friend!

OK... good search

WPG is watts PER gallon therefore g / w = 29/25 = <1wpg

u need more light... now go here:

The reason is if you have low light and start pumping in CO2 u get algae issues. If u want riccia u need CO2 and light anyway.
Riccia grows easily in the right conditions, u just need the light and CO2 available. Of course once u have added ur light and CO2 u need to think about fertz or again u have algae problems!

Its a circle and i don`t think people realise this, i didnt when i started! Basically u need to read about EI ferts, lighting and CO2 and get them all up and running together is the best way!

the DIY co2 bottle is barely 10 dollars,

need an empy 2liter bottle
some tubing and tube ends
powerhead to diffuse
yeast packets from the supermarket
sugar from the supermarket

not sure how much yeast is i nthe uk, but.. 1 small teaspoon lasts 2 weeks
