Hiya. Im Kelly, 21 so erm...group 21-25- took me a while to work that out!

1) Do you agree that the destruction of coral reefs is a big issue?
Yes- but not many people know about it as it does not 'directly affect them'- so whilst it is not a 'big issue' for me...it is a big issue...if that makes sense...
2) Do you think its important to protect out coral reefs?
Yep
3) Do you do your part to protect the environment from pollution and global warming?
Nope not really...well, i put rubbish in the bin...thats about it.
4) Have you ever done anything to harm the environment especially the ocean?
Nope...live in liverpool..closest you get is the Albert Dock-and thats a bit crappy anyways

5) Would you be willing to spend tax money to protect the environment?
Nope...but thats because im a student and rather spend it on sweets and such things-but if it was compulsory i would rather pay that than stuff like council tax6)
Would you join an organization that is dedicated to protecting the environment?
No-without sounding offensive..many people who seem to join them are very extreme..and a bit smelly
7) Should people use other safer means to catch fish instead of cyanide and explosives?
[/b]
8) If you had a saltwater tank would you purchase tank raised or tank bred fish intead of wild caught?
Tank bred- would seem like keeping a tiger in a cat basket otherwise- a bit cruel
9) How about aquacultered corals and other invertebrates?
Not to fussed...somehow if it doesnt have a spine it doesnt seem like it would 'feel' anything
10) Do you agree that tank raised/bred fish and aquacultured corals and invertebrates are a good idea?
A good idea in the sense that they can raise awareness and stuff...but bad if taken from natural environments and not replaced-like cutting down trees for paper.

thanks for all your help guys

Age Group:
14-16

1) Do you agree that the destruction of coral reefs is a big issue?
A- I'm not to familiar with coral reefs or the ammount that is destructed, but I don't think it's a big issue.

2) Do you think its important to protect out coral reefs?
It's important to protect a certain ammount of a coral reef.

3) Do you do your part to protect the environment from pollution and global warming?
I don't litter, if that helps.

4) Have you ever done anything to harm the environment especially the ocean?
I've maybe pee'd in it once or twice when I was a little kid, otherwise no.

5) Would you be willing to spend tax money to protect the environment?
I don't pay tax money, but depending on what my money was going towards.

6) Would you join an organization that is dedicated to protecting the environment?
Probably not, but i'd help protect the environment on my own.

7) Should people use other safer means to catch fish instead of cyanide and explosives?
Yes

8] If you had a saltwater tank would you purchase tank raised or tank bred fish intead of wild caught?
Yes, for three reasons; they are used to tanks, they most likely won't carry disease and I wouldn't be taking anything out of it's natural habbitat.

9) How about aquacultered corals and other invertebrates?
I'd try to buy them that have been brought up in tank, but if push comes to shove i'd buy it from the wild.

10) Do you agree that tank raised/bred fish and aquacultured corals and invertebrates are a good idea?
Yes.

1) Yes

2) Yes

3) Yes, every thing is my house that can be recycled, is recycled. "everything".

4) I would eat a lot of fish 3-4 times a week. Eating fish, endorses fishing which in turn leads to the destruction of fish stocks and damage of habitats due to trawling methods.

5) Yes I think a certain about of tax payer money should go to conservation in general

Age group: 17-20

1) Do you agree that the destruction of coral reefs is a big issue?

Definitely! Its being destroyed far too quickly, it'll be gone before we know it.

2) Do you think its important to protect out coral reefs?

Of course.

3) Do you do your part to protect the environment from pollution and global warming?

I do what I can from where I live; no littering, car pooling, etc.

4) Have you ever done anything to harm the environment especially the ocean?

Of course not, I would never intentionally harm the environment, or the ocean, if I was near it.

5) Would you be willing to spend tax money to protect the environment?

Well... being in a lower working class family, we can just make ends meet now, so an added tax? I would love to, for the sake of nature but we probably couldnt afford it. Unless it replaced a different tax.

6) Would you join an organization that is dedicated to protecting the environment?

Possibly. Not if they're extremeists though. Its very important, yes, but some people take things too far.

7) Should people use other safer means to catch fish instead of cyanide and explosives?

Now this 've never heard of... using explosives to catch fish? Wouldnt that just kinda... blow the fish up? In any case, that's bad.

8 ) If you had a saltwater tank would you purchase tank raised or tank bred fish intead of wild caught?

Definitely tank raised, I wouldnt be stealing anything from its home, plus usually tank raised fish are hardier since they're used to aquarium settings.

9) How about aquacultered corals and other invertebrates?

Sure, tank raised would be shiny.

10) Do you agree that tank raised/bred fish and aquacultured corals and invertebrates are a good idea?

Of course. Because if we dont have tank raised fish/coral/other we're still gonna have people that want them and will continute taking them from the wild.

Hello, I am 25 here's me answers

1). Yes its a massive issue, I dont know alot anout it but it has knock on effects with everything else surrounding it and more. Its similar to fishing boats ripping up the sea beds with their nets. big problem not just for fish but for the whole ecological system.

2) Yes I do.

3) No I dont do anything apart from the colour coded bins for our waste. should do more I spose.

4) Nope dont think so, apart from drive a car.

5) I think it would be a good idea to spend money on the environment but I dont think money is what it needs, I think the worlds needs to stop being a (use it once and chuck it world.) if you know what I mean.

6) No way man, same answer as kelly belly, they look like hippies. (nothing wrong with hippies BTW) its just an analogy......digging the hole nearly finished. lol

7) Cyanide, explosives, wwwwwhat  I think these fish must be dead ones. erm what happened to a rod and a hook.

8) I would just buy fish for the tank I dont think there is anyway you could possibly tell, but most fish we buy today are wild caught aren't they?

9) Yeah I would buy the lot.

10) off course it a good idea, it preserves natural stocks.

cheers chish :good:

thanks guys. i nearly have all the replys i need for the survey. if i could get a responce from some one who is 32-40 that would be great.

Age group... 32 to 40 (ho did THAT ever happen?)
a. Yes,
b. Yes
c. Yes
d. No
e Yes
f. Yes
g. Yes - but IMO they shouldn't be caught from reefs at all, even if that means marine tanks are no longer possible
h. I'd not have a marine tank becuase at the moment is pretty much impossible to set one up without using things taken from reefs in some part of it.
i) see above. The trade in some specimens should be treated like a trade in ivory, or tiger-teeth, or whatever.
I'm not freaky-hippy type, but I have dived in some stunning places and am too aware of the oressures on these places.

1) Do you agree that the destruction of coral reefs is a big issue?

YES I DO

2) Do you think its important to protect out coral reefs?

YES I DO

3) Do you do your part to protect the environment from pollution and global warming?

VAGUELY. I SPONSOR SOME ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANISATIONS

4) Have you ever done anything to harm the environment especially the ocean?

I DRIVE A CAR, I USE ELECTRICITY. SO YES.

5) Would you be willing to spend tax money to protect the environment?

YES, ON THE PROVISO THAT IT WAS WELL SPENT, WHICH IS UNLIKELY.

6) Would you join an organization that is dedicated to protecting the environment?

NO, I'M NOT THAT INTERACTIVE ON THE SUBJECT.

7) Should people use other safer means to catch fish instead of cyanide and explosives?

THAT'S A LEADING QUESTION. SAFER FOR WHOM? IN PRINCIPLE, YES OF COURSE.

8) If you had a saltwater tank would you purchase tank raised or tank bred fish intead of wild caught?

IF THEY WERE AVAILABLE, YES.

9) How about aquacultered corals and other invertebrates?

AGAIN, YES.

10) Do you agree that tank raised/bred fish and aquacultured corals and invertebrates are a good idea?

THAT'S KIND OF REPEATING THE LAST TWO QUESTIONS. YES THEY ARE.

thanks for all your help guys!

I fall into the 26-31 age category.

By the way, as a professional researcher, may I add some comments regarding your study?

Some of your questions are leading, and the survey has not been designed from an independent point of view.

How representative your study is, is in question. By posting it here as your sole sample source, you are effectively asking stakeholders with similar attitudes, rather than the general population. Provided you state that your study was carried out amongst fishkeepers then that's fine, but don't try and peddle it as representative of the general population.

In order for your study to be representative across each age category, I would suggest you need 20 minumum in each age band in order for it to even approach reliability (assuming you want to look at the varying attitudes across the bands).

If you want any help interpreting your results, pm me.
