Had play sand in my tank for a while now and its like under the first layer of sand its like black at sum bits what is this is it okay

It's like that in my tank too, none of my fish are bothered by it, so I'm not either.

i stir mine every now and then, apparently it helps to help prevent this :good:

Just needs a good stir. I used to stir mine every week or two. I have since changed to limpopo and it is much better though. I would not go back to playsand.

I just ordered 25kgs of black Limpopo sand. Changing my current play sand as its too dense and makes the fish look faint in colour

It's bacteria that grow when there isn't any oxygen getting to the lower levels of the substrate. I found some under my coconut caves when I rescaped recently. I dont think it does any harm, it just looks unsightly.
