Hi...I have Cory's and glow light tetras, and my tank is very harmonious...I am thinking of adding some platys but not sure whether to add males or females or both (more females than males )would the females be more placid than the males and is there a suggested minimum of numbers to keep? And does anyone think that platys would not be a good idea to mix with my very calm, almost shy glow lights?

I have five platies and they are wonderful fish, mine are sunburst wag platies. male to female ratio 1:2 for platies (mine is 3 males and two females, but didn't know this rule before I bought them and they are fine, very hardy fish).

1 male to 2-3 females is a very good number although you will be dealing with fry at some point.
I'd rather just get some females as there is no colour difference between the two sexes and not have the constant bother of fry every where.

I have three females and absolutely love them. Plus I don't have to deal with any fry, which is a bonus for me! Theyr are also extremely peaceful to each other/other fish in the tank

I have to say, not all Platys are peaceful and friendly.
I knew of a fully grown female Platy I had to separate from a tank at work as she bullied everything.
A colleague rehomed her, he actually brought her back as she bullied all his Harlequins and even his BN.
I then moved her into our display tank with fancy Goldfish in, she bullied the largest Oranda in there, pestering it constantly.

She is a rare exception! She eventually went to live by herself in a 15L tank owned by a little girl who I helped set up her first fish tank.
Best of friends :p

I have both male and female Platys, they are generally peaceful. My guppies usually bully them now and again. I have Sunset Wagtail Platys. They are are peaceful but certainly not boring, they know the hand that feeds them everytime i enter the room or move about in it there straight to the glass to see me and to beg for more food. There great certainly my favourite of all the fishes personality in my tank.

At the moment i only have 2 but ones i have had are happy in any amount.

if you get a mix you wont have to deal with fry, cause they eat their own, as soon as a fry spawns in my tank it gets eaten... :(

Omg I can't be having anything eaten in my tank lol....I am going to hope with all my heart that if I get 4 female platys they will be barren....I can't cope with the stress of fry...exciting as it must be I wouldn't be able to sleep at night with worry about every single one...let alone the fact that I wouldn't have space for them in the tank.....my partner would be really pleased with me if I had to set up another tank!!!!
