Platys, Swordtails Or Guppys?

is it possible for platys to change sex? i only ask as i have one fry who i was sure would be female, they grew and grew and became rounded and large like the ladies, but turned out to be male! its the same size as the females, same shape, but is most definatly male, and is a monster compared to my other males!!!

well i bought two 'supposedly' dalmation platys yesterday, but im not sure thats what they are, yes they have some black and white, but the female also has yellow, orange and green shimmers, and the male has the most gorgeous forked tale ive seen, i wonder if he was crossed with something? will get some pics up in a minute.

did go for some endlers but this particular branch of tom+co didnt have them so i have to travel across town in a few days for some!

Don't worry too much, unless like I said in your other thread you have soft acidic water. I've had mine in light brackish and hard fresh water for months at a time and he didn't show any changes in behavior.

They mix fine with platys, swords, and guppies. Rarely, they'll cross with guppies, and mine mates often with platys, but they can't cross. IMO, if they're doing good for a few weeks, get a male, if you have room in the tank. Sailfin males are one of the most beautiful things the common livebearers have to offer.

he is a male, i got one male one female :) the one with the tail is the male :) many thanks for your help, just been googling, do i really need to add salt to their water? id have to get them a different tank if i do!

If you have soft water, it'd be a good idea. However, I have mine in fresh water, and a friend of mine has a 55 gallon tank with nothing BUT mollies, and has bred them in fresh water for years with no trouble.
