I have marbles next to a rock formation. That way there are easy places to hide inside the marbles and sometimes under the rocks! Fakeplants don't really conceal the fry for me.

would stones from a garden do if i boiled them to kill any bacteria? if i placed them on top of each other?

Stones from the garden, depending on what they are, may cause swings in your pH. You can do this to test.

1. Boil the stones.
2. Set some tap water out and test the pH of the water after it sits out for 24 hours.
3. Toss in the rocks. Measure the pH 24 hours late and see if it's different.

Also, you can put white vinegar on the rocks. If you see no reaction, they're probably okay. As I have never used rocks from my garden, I wouldn't know what else to test for, but these test should be good for pH swings.
