Fish Symptoms: One platy has the pinecone look, bulging abdomen, scales sticking out. Some of the other platys are flashing.

Volume and Frequency of water changes:Monthly 40% as recommended by the manual for the tank.

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank:Na

Tank inhabitants:6 platys (male), 5 neons, two amano shrimp.

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): two platys a month ago.

What I'm going to do: the tank is due for it's monthly water and filter change, so that, along with whatever med you guys suggest. The water change should hopefully reduce the NO3 spike. I know the affected platy probably won't get better, but I have nowhere else to put him. So I guess it'll have to be observation and then euthanise if necessary.
I hope this is the correct course of action. Any advice is most appreciated.

P.s. I can provide very low quality pics but the poor fish looks like that shown here http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v429/Sim...nt=Diseases.jpg under the entry for dropsy.

Your'e right the fish with dropsy isn't going to make it, as when the scales stick out that the last stage of the desease, organ failure.
They could be flashing as the water quality is poor, any signs of salt like spots on the fish, or a whitish colour on the fish.
How many fish are in the tank, as it only small and platys get big and are active fish, so really the tank is to small.
Also how long has the tank been set up.

Hi Wilder,
Tank set up for about 3-4 months.
Total population is 5 neons, 6 young platys (1.5") and 2 amano shrimp.
Do you think I should put the ill fish out of it's misery?
Thanks again.

Edit; no sign of the dreaded white spot or anything else, not even a clamped fin amongst the other inhabitants.

If she look bad yes end her suffering, get a small container fill with really cold water add some ice cubes, then place the fish in it.
You are overstocked that why your water quality is bad.

Alright, thanks wilder, ought I to treat the rest of the tank with anything?
I'll move the other platys out in a couple of weeks once I'm sure they're ok.
Thanks again.

Just some daily water changes for now, good luck.
