Hello. I've had success breeding egg-layers but not livebearers as of yet. I'm trying now!! I now have platies and soon to have guppies (tomorrow) and swordtails (in a few weeks hopefully)
I was given four platies, one male (nemo - he has one small fin!!) and three females (red spot, ariel and jasmine). Ariel has a very silver belly which can be seen clearly uinder her orange skin/scales. She has always had this since I have had her. She currently has no black spot by her anal fin but I think is getting fatter by the day. Is the silver pregnancy or is it more likely it's just the colouration? The other two females have no silver belly so I thought I would ask.
Thanks very much.

Yes, some will have a silver belly when they are pregnant..because of their stomachs stretching. . A few of mine do.

You may not see any gravid spot yet, because the gravid spot is actually the frys' eyes. They may not be that far developed. Or, sometimes in orange fish, it can look light reddish.

If she looks like she is in pain, or having trouble, she may be bloated or have dropsy, though. I'd keep an eye on her. But if I'm thinking the kind of silver stomach you are, she's probably pregnant. Anyway you could get a picture, though? :)

As in you would like some fry when they arrive and are big enough or are you wishing me luck?!?!

Thank you very much. I currently have two guppies both showing their gravid spots, three pregnant platies one of whom develops light gravid spots every eveing but they are gone by the eveing so the fish are still turning. Thanks for the good luck!!

That is the wierdest thing I have ever heard

Well that's what I presume is still happening. That's what happened to one of mates fish. She gave birth a few days after this started happening.

I have had livebearers since I was a little baby and it has never happened to me. sometimes the gravid spot will turn a peachish color if it is out of the light (like at night) but it comes back when the light is back on after a few hours. could that be it.

The reason it sometimes turn lighter when the light is out, is because the fry turned around! So you are seeing their bodies, not their eyes which is what makes the gravid spot appear brown/black. When the light comes back on, the fry turn to face the light so the eyes show again, and the gravid spot gets darker.

Well.....Ariel has had her gravid spot solidly for 48 hours now....I can't wait!!
Just thought I'd update you all.
I'm going to take her out tomorrow probably and put her in my 17 litre breeding and rearing tank and see what happens! Only thing is...I also have two guppy females who have had their gravid spots for a while!! Could I put them all in together? Then once the first one has popped put a small breeding net in the tank for the other two females? That should be fine right???

P.S. Blitztidus - isn't that what I was saying was happenign or was that not clear????? I don't understand why you said that was a wierd thing for me to say and then agreed with it!!!
