:-( my male platty has become quite withdrawn and sluggish. have tested water and all is well and there is no sign of obvious problems (ie whitespot etc....) his body has a funny like film over it and he aint looking his bright normal colour.... what could this be? and how can it be treated? i'm thinking along the lines of a bacterial infection just after a 2nd opinion.... chees guys! :kana:

Do you mean a whitish grey film over the body as that can mean bacteria infection or parasite, has the fish been flicking and rubbing against objects, any heavy laboured breathing, are gills red and inflamed or pale, can you say how big is the tank in gallons, post water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph, how many fish and which type.

ammonia - 0
nitirite - 0
nitrate - 40

nitarte is slightly high cuz am bit over stoocked..... clown loach are going to new home soon

how can i treat the platty?

yeah its like a white film coating whole body.... how can this be traeted? fish is suffering would it be better to put it to sleep? hate to see it suffering

Milky Skin- Milky skin is excess mucus production. If no new fish have been added more than likely the reason is from pH plunges. Symptoms: Fish hanging at the surface, their skin will appear milky, and their eyes may turn whitish. Treatment: If the pH is stable, but you have added new fish, you can consider ammonia burn, or perhaps parasites. In either event, using salt is highly recommended. In some rare cases, a salt resistant Trichodina, Costia, or Fluke infestation may be the culprit. Use of a microscope will be needed to diagnose this. Then you would treat for the parasite you discovered accordingly.
