I have had a platy for a few months and a few weeks ago it got really fat and lazy. It is a girl and the other ones a boy so i hope it is pregnant but it just lays in this plant that i put in the tank and the only way i can get him to move is if i tap the glass or put food in.

ALSO if it is pregnant and has babies, does the other fish eat the babies?

Hi Zozorox3,

:hi: to TFF!

I have moved this topic to our 'Livebearers' section where it should get more attention.

is it the female or the male that is in the plant? (to tell the sex look at the anal fins..on the female its a normal fin,on the male it looks like a cone (its called a gonopodium)

What else is in the tank and what size is it?

Some baby fish will be eaten when born but some will manage to swim into ur plants and ornaments where they will hide and scavange for a few weeks until they are large enough to be safe (so dont worry, u will bring platys up to full maturity with very little input)

My platys were VERY VERY shy when i added them, its taken about 7 weeks for them to become properly comfortable in the tank and when they feel threatened and stressed (or due to drop babies) they will just sit on their own in a secluded area.. this could be what is happening with yours..does she look unevenly bloated? any problems with any fins or scales? breathing ok? is she sat ON the plant/substrate or is she keeping herself up by swimming?

If a female platy drops her fry n a community tank, the chances of the fry surviving are not very good. I have my best success by moving the female to a separate birthing tank that has lots of cover in it to keep the female from eating the fry and then removing the female shortly after she delivers.

Thank you everyone soooooo much this really helped a lot! But i was wondering should i put the male in a seperate tank with the female? Or just the female alone?

After the first day together, you only need the female in the birthing tank. That day has probably already come and gone while we were sending posts back and forth so leave the male in the main tank. The male, at that point, is just another fry eater.
