Platy? Or Platy Crossed With Something?

Sounds like an abort, probably due to recent move. Euthanise the ones that are rolled up in balls. They are undeveloped and will never grow into adult fish but may suffer and try to move without inflating their swim bladders for several hours before they die. Fry with twisted or bent tails will not be able to swim either, we call them taildraggers. They have to be euthanised as well. I have never had a brood without at least one or two taildraggers or fry that failed to unroll. The proportion of deformed or half developed fry increases if the female is very young (first few broods are only a few fry, she may not even look pregnant - maybe yours is young, how big is she?) very old, hasn't mated for a long time or there is a lot of inbreeding in the line.

well we were all wrong! mrs molly popped this morning, lots and lots of little baby mollys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but sadly around a quarter of them are badly disformed and/or not developed (still stuck in a ball shape, you can just see the eyes) but we have about 20 healthy babys :)

thanks all

Really?

Can you post some pics of the mother, and the health fry

the mother is in the main tank and fry are in the fry tank with roughly 100 platy fry, i can get a pic of the deformed/non developed fry as they are still in the hatchery, if that is any help to you :)

just got some pics uploading of healthy fry and bad egg looking shaped things that came out of mummy fish between live fish :( :?

ok here we go
1st pic if you look right at the back of the tank there are some darker fry, they are the mollys, the fish at the front (lighter) are the platy

3rd pic - the 'leftovers' note the yellow egg/ball shaped things, when viewed close you can see semi developed fish inside but they are dead, sorry the photo is not sharp enough to catch this. also to the right of the pic on the floor of the hatchery is a fish that is alive but has a huge lump and cannot swim, how do i put something so small out of its misery??

also there is a quick video of the fry, shows the detail a bit better for you :)

could anyone enlighten me as to why there may have been so many deformed/still born fish? could the fish have been stressed with the move from the petshop and popped early or perhaps as she is only young??

mother molly is back in the community tank. i will have one up by the morning for you :) just getting my kids ready for bed.

sorry i totally forgot to put the mother pic on yesterday. my apologies. just took these, sorry they are a little dark but the lights dont come on until this evening.

in answer to the question about how big she is - shes about 4cm (just?) i dont think shes very old as she was out of a new delivery at the lfs. so is it likely this 'birth' was an abort due to stress then seeing as there were a lot of deformities and deaths or would that be because of her age?

a few more of the fry seemed to have perished (or been eaten by other fry?) :-( but i still have 9 left that (touch wood) are doing well in with the platy fry.

i think i may have put her back in the community tank too soon though, the male was after her straight away and hasnt left her in peace since. would it be an idea perhaps to purchase another female (two females per one bloke i believe is the general guide? does that count with mollys too?)

try to click the one what? sorry dont understand what you mean?

edit- ohhh do you mean the link? im not wanting to know if shes ready to drop, she dropped on sunday! im just wondering why so many stillborn/deformed/ dead fry

thanks anyway :)
