Sad story.

This morning, I found dead fry all over the tank. Also, there was a conglomerate of ugly white stuff (with a diameter about 8mm) hanging out of an old female platy's anus. That stuff consisted of some dead fry (I could see some black eyes compared to the white background; there were probably about 8 dead fry in that stuff) and maybe something else. The old female fish looked extremely thin, so I thought she didn't have anything left in her belly. I thought it would help to pull that stuff off her anus, so I did. After that, she felt like sick and unbalanced. I was about to treat her with some antibiotics before I found her dead tonight.

Did I sort of kill her? I'm really sad. What happened to her? Is it possible that she is too old (I got this female platy along with a tank, so I don't know how old she was. But she looked reasonably old.) and difficult to deliver?

Some background information:

There are two female platies (one young + one old and now dead) in this 5 gallon tank, along with one male platy and two male guppies.

The young female gave birth to 13 dead fry on 7/8. (There is the sad story http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/421438-my-platy-gave-birth-to-13-dead-fetuses/)

From 7/30 to 8/1, a total of 16 fry were collected from the tank, all healthy. Honestly, I didn't see which one was the mother, as both females looked very plump after all the fry were collected. I saw from internet that it's normally about 4-6 weeks between two drops. So I assume the old female was the mother. But I still don't understand why she gave birth to fry in a span of 3 days. (There is the happy story http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/422594-new-platy-fries/)

And then the disaster today (8/2).

I have numerous questions on this case.
1. Who was the mother of the 16 healthy fry, the young one or the old one?
2. Why does she give birth to fry in a span of 3 days?
3. Is it possible that a fish gives birth to some healthy fry and then pushes dead fry out afterward?
4. Why does the old fish have that conglomerate of white stuff hanging out of her anus?
5. Is it dangerous for an old female to get pregnant and deliver, like human?
6. Would I save her if I didn't pull the ugly stuff manually?

Sorry for this disgusting post; but these are all bloody true and I'm still really upset.

ive have no clue but its sounds horrible and im sorry for your losses

I think I'd start with a bigger tank. I honestly think a 5 gallon tank has next to no room for breeding. There's just a lack of water volume to keep it clean.

As for the white stuff, I highly doubt that it would have made a difference.

I really regret that I bought this 5 gallon tank without much thinking. After a few experiments, the minimal frequency of water change is one week. Any time longer will make the tank a mess. I have another bigger tank but it stocks some violent fish and won't suit these little guppies and platies.

BTW, this tank is in the office. There were about 6 false fire alarms recently. The alarm is so annoying that no human beings can stand. I wonder whether the fire alarms bother the mother or not.

The silver lining now is that those 16 babies are all right. They were transparent at birth, and now about half of them gain some orange tone, while their parents are actually red in the body.

Im so sorry for the loss

. I think the problem is the size of the tank, especially if you want fry. id recommend getting a 10 gallon or so.
