Hi This morning as i was counting my fish i noticed my female silver platy looked a bit distorted in shape i.e her spine has a huge curve in it just behind her head, her anus area also looks thinner, we also feel she looks fluffy around the edges and Im also p[ositive she has three little white spots on her side

Sorry but it's not sounding to good, she has other infections too, sounds like tb with possilbe columnaris, the spots on the belly are they fluffy in appearance, i would recommend that you issolate the sick fish from the others, is the anus red and inflamed, does the belly look sunken in.

her belly isn't swollen, she appears quite fluffy all over her fins, the white spots appear to have lightened in colour and look less grainy. we started treating her with white spot control and this is to be done every 48 hrs for a week. no other fish appears to be infected but we dont have a quarantine tank and dont know what to do with her. we are also using revitalising tonic which treats other fish diseases like fin rot and fungus.

We have recently had a nitrate and ph spike (unexplained.) My tank is a 14 gallon with platies, swordtails, cory's and neons.

Ammonia is 0ppm
Nitrite 00ppm
Nitrate 5ppm
Ph spiked to 7.4 it usually sits at 7.2

Sounds like a spot of fungus and perhaps ammonia/nitrite poisoning is causing the fish to curl up. Keep doing 20% water changes daily with water matured over night (with an airstone if possible) and clean the gravel carefully. Perhaps backing off on the feeding for thre or four days will help also.

Dont start treating for TB or white spot immediately, a good all round treatment like QuickCure or Tetra Contra Spot given in half the stated dose should sort out any parasite/fungus problems if the water is kept clean.

hi, she apears to be getting better, we have treated her twice with the revitalising tonic and white spot control and the fluffiness has disappeared. However I checked my water stats and we have still a Ph spike, it is sitting at about 7.5 which is strange as it normally sits at 7.2. I also have higher nitrates than normal even though I have no ammonia and nitrites. I guess i wil keep doing small water changes and see how we get on.
