Hi

I think one of my patties was pregnant before i went on holiday.

I think she has had them while a friend was feeding them. How big are they when they are born and if any survived how long before I will be able to see them if there are any there.

Thanks Steve

They are very small when born....as a rough guide ___ bout that size maybe even a little smaller......if you have a heavily planted tank...you may find some...my tank is heavily planted, and my platy gave birth about 2 weeks ago...and only yesterday I found another baby hiding whilst I was doing a clean of the tank....so you may still have some hiding if you have plants in the tank. They hide for ages...well mine do...I had a platy give birth and only found 2 fry....4 weeks later I spotted another one, which have to say did extremely well to stay alive in a community tank full of hungry fishes...so good luck...hope you find some lickle ones.

My platy gave birth on the same day that my town had a severe thunderstorm and we ended up having a blackout. Before then, I thought I had caught all the platy babies. Just to be sure, I used my flashlight during the blackout and scanned the tank. In total darkness and with the filter having no power, all of my fish looked like they were in suspended animation. My flashlight found two additional babies that had come out of hiding and it was very easy for me to catch them. Although I don't know if this technique is safe for the fish, I found it helped bring the babies out of hiding so that I could save them. I found it easy to spot their little orange bodies against my green plants and neutral-colored gravel.

FYI here's what a one day old dwarf platy fry looks like. For comparison, the fry is in one of those Petco betta containers.

Mine gave birth, but I only found one, then I found another one about 3 days later, so you might still find some
