So I was cleaning my canister filter tonight, and what do you think I found in the water flushed out of the filter? TWO platy fry! Swimming around happy as clams! They've been rescued and put with their brothers and sisters, but I was amazed they were not only surviving in the filter, but appeared to be thriving!

Haha Thankfully they're alright!!
Are the gaps in the filter too big?
I kept mine in a breeding net till they were big enough to avoid things like that, and are big enough to search for food successfully.

It is not too surprising that you have thriving platy fry7. There are no predators in the filter, the water supply is always fresh, fine bits of food come in with the water every time you feed, etc. What else could a fry want?

I use a filter sponge, made for one of the major filter makers, to cover my canister inlet tube. I simply cut a slit in the sponge and slip it over the inlet tube. It even acts as a prefilter for the main filter.

I actually adopted this idea for both my fry tank and my betta tank :) I think you recommended it a while back in a different thread. It's been very helpful, except I had a few ambitious fry that actually dug themselves into the sponge and got stuck, and were dea by the time I got to them :( but I had 19 survivors.
