Hi,

Our very first platy fry were born last night. I managed to scoop up 5 and have put them in a breeding net but I was thinking of getting a 2nd small tank for the fry. Does anyone have any advice on how to go about this? Clearly I do not have a 2nd cycled tank ready so would it be ok if I set up a new small tank with water from the big tank?

The other option is to leave the fry in the net but it takes quite a lot of space.

the easiest and best way to set up a new small tank is with water from your cycled tank.

Went to Pets@home but they didn't have a small tank. Waiting for delivery tomorrow.

Fry are fantastic! Who needs telly?! I've been watching them non-stop and am still not bored!

With only 5 fry, you have a week or two to get things set up. I have found that cleaning a filter in a new tank seeds the new filter well enough to just move fry into the tank and have the filter develop along with the growth of the fry. With the veery other day water changes you will be doing to promote fry growth, the water would stay fairly good even if the new tank was not cloned using that method.
