so last night looking at my female calico platy i could tell it was going to be soon. either in the middle of the night or this morning while i was away at mass , she drtopped her babys. im thinking she dropped last night , as i could only find two fry , both of which i put in my breeder net. they are swimming around happily , and im going to give them crushed flake 3 times a day. i also have freeze dried brine shrimp , which i can crush into powder - is this suitable?? i think this was her first time giving birth , how many fry should she have had??

keep looking for fry, shje should have dropped atleast 20 some must have been eaten, crushed flake is food for now go simple im on day 8 with my platy fry theyll look like they dont heat but they do, makesure you have a clean tank

ok thanks . the male and female were both calicos , i dont suppose the fry will end up being anything but calicos? im doing 50% water changes every day

dont do that much water change maybe like 10% btw dont expect these fry to grow fast in its first week my fry are still yet to grow large but you will notice a size difference

oh , 10% sounds good , should it be the same process as normal tank water changes ( take % out add same amount in <conditioned tap water>)

edit - should they be ready to go into the main tank in a month? the only half aggressive fish i have in the community is the mild mannered columbian tetra. im going away in a month and i dont want to leave overly explicit instructions for feeding the fish

OH then keep them in the net cuz theyll die like that

they'll be large enough as im told but not large enough for agresssive fish

thats what i thought , it was just a bit weirdly phrased

it really depends on what the generations before were, but most likely they will be calico :D and 50% everyday is a little much, try 10% everyday, less stress for the little ones.

There is no set number for how many fry they drop. One of mine drops 3-5 fry each time, so this could be one that has a lower number of fry.

They'll grow well in the first week if you give them high protein foods, live is especially good. :good:

10-25% is a good range. And yes, you'd do it like a normal water change.

The rule of thumb is when they are too big to fit in the biggest fish's mouth, that's when you can stick them back in the main tank safely. :)
