I found my platy on the floor this morning and can't seem to be able to think how he got out of the tank, as when I switched the tank lights out last night he was in the tank, it's a juwel tank and the lid fits tightly their are gaps in the hood for wires, as anybody else experienced something like this, I feel awful for the poor guy, and why would he want to jump out of the tank, as the test results are all fine so it wasn't water quality.

It might have jumped out because it got scared by a loud bump, noise, or a tank inhabitant that scared it.

Fish can jump through very small holes, it's remarkable, but sad.

How big of a gap is there for the fish to jump out of?

Thanks for your reply, just standard gaps i suppose on tanks for wires, it's never happened since I started the hobby 19 months ago, he could of been scared as he was a new platy.

One of my danios was being chased by another danio and she jumped right out through a tiny (barely fit through) hole on the side of the lid for wires. I have since covered this hole as I don't want a repeat of that incident. Point is that water quality and hole size doesn't always matter :p

Thanks sylvia what do you fill the gaps with.

Depends on the gap and the tank lol On one tank (this particular one) I put a piece of perspex plastic over it with holes cut to the size of the wires so that there was absolutely no gap left. On another tank the hood doesn't fit exactly all the way round (it's difficult to explain) so that one has straws to fill the tiny gap (the hood itself is supported on four corners by little plastic things so there are these gaps going around that are precisely straw size) :p ... On another tank I've actualy used aluminium foil on the outside of the tank and moulded around the wires - possibly not the safest option but the only one at the time and I've had no problems with it. A piece of paper taped to the back is what covers one other hole - so basicaly, you get the idea - anything and everything I can use :p

Right thanks for the advice well appreciated.

:) If its a Juwel tank does it have the internal filter, if so i have all my wires going out of the hole around the filter and have blocked off the other hole.

Dont think a fish will jump over the power jet, onto the filter lid then hop out over the cables thru the hole.

If they do they really want out lol

Yes it's a juwel with a filter box that's a good idea, never happened before thanks for your input.
