Hi,

I have a red mickey mouse Platty and two remaining female Silver Mollies.
Platty is male and jad him from an adult for about 8 months,
He has been lying at the bottom of the tank and only movinga little - this has been going on for a good few days now.
He looks like he is gasping and his tail seems to be kinked over to one side???
He does have one white spot on his tail!
The water is as follows

Ph 7.0
Amonia 0
Nitrite 0

Raised the temp up to 28 degrees and added a teaspoon of marine salt.

I have also changed the water on a regular basis at 20%.
I have also treated with a tonic and King British white spot.

Does anyone know what might be the poor little chaps problem?
I hate to see him like this :(
He isn't eating.

best wishes

Chris

tail going over to one side is usually a bad sign. how big is the tank they are in? salt added at one level teaspoon per gallon and then the same again in 12 hours may help his breathing but i would use tonic salt in case he is missing any minerals. as you have had him since he was an adult then his time may be up as male livebearers dont really have the lifespan of the females.
do you do gravel vacs when changing the water? this helps to get rid of any toxins that may be hiding in the gravel.

I had a platy that had it's tail going to one side, it not sounding good i'm afraid and epecially if its gasping, can you issolate the fish.

Are you totally positive that its a male? Female livebearers somtimes adopt that position when they are trying to give birth.

Hi there,

Thankyou all.

Ok

He is definately male.
His scales now look like they are fluffing up and the redness is draining from his tail :(
Tank is approx 8 gallons - so far i have only put in 1 level teaspoon of salt bought from local FS.
I cannot isolate at the moment as I dont have another tank.
I do use a gravel vac to do all my water changes.
The Mollies look fine at the moment...I hope it doesnt spread.
Should I put in 8 teaspoons of salt???
The white spot looked like a little grain of rice, but more like a grain of sugar.
It seems to have dissapeared almost.

Thanks for any guidance

Chris

Mine had dropsy when it's tail went bent, if the scales are pinconing there isn't anything to be done, last stage of the desease, sorry, wouldn't let it die in the tank though can you issolate it to a bucket.

Oh poo :(
That sounds bad.. Will he die quicker in a bucket with no heater?
He was my first fish :-(

Thanks for your help...

Chris

No it take a while for the temp to go down, what is the temp of the room he will be kept in, sorry but he sounds in a bad way with the tail as well as mine went like that.

i am really sorry but theres nothing you can do for him. i think the best thing would be to euthenize him but i dont know of anything really effective other than adding clove oil to a small container of tank water and giving it a good shake to mix and then add the fish to it. :-( sorry, i know its hard.

Or vodka, no easy way to do it, but i'm not for chopping there heads off, or even a sleeping tablet if you have any.

eep, dont use alcohol. i heard alka seltzer takes the oxygen away, but when i had to do it i used a hard object and hit them on the head and its gone. :/

Oh well, he's gone now :byebye: ...I think the stress of moving him to a holding place was too much for the little chap.

Thanks for all your help.

Chris

Oh, that's so sad. Very sorry for your loss. It's never easy to lose a fish - especially one that you've had for awhile.

:rip: little fishie.

Sorry for your loss, R.I.P.
