Fish Fanatic
I have had my platties for almost two months now, and in all that time I have only had one birth event. None of the others even look pregnant, and the one that did give birth (2-3 weeks ago) is not pregnant again. I do not want a tank full of fry or even for most of the fry to survive, but if there is a problem in the tank that is causing them not to breed, I want to correct that and resolve any anxiety or stress that is keeping them from their normal behavior.
I have 8 platties in the tank, 2 males, 6 females. One of the males is pretty aggressive to the other but in a non-violent way, just chases him a bit. The big male is about 1.5-1.75 inches, the smaller male is about 1.5 inches and all the females are between 1.5-2.0 inches (the 2.0 inch female is the formerly pregnant one).
My tank specs are - 10 gal; pH - 7.0, Alkalinity - 80; Hardness - 75; Ammonia, Nitrites - 0; Nitrates - 20. I change the H2O every week about 25-35% each change. They eat once a day in the morning, and the tank light is on for approx 6-8 hrs daily (do I need to set the mood for them?) The tank is moderately planted and there are 3 good hiding spots, including a coconut shell cave.
All help is appreciated.
