I had a sick platy that I moved to a hospital tank. The symptoms were losing weight, a damaged fin (which seemed to appear overnight) and eventually just resting at the bottom of the tank. She was still coming to the top to feed. My best guess was that it was fin rot caused by a bacterial infection, so I moved her to the hospital tank and dosed it with Tetracycline. However I think it was too little too late and she was dead this morning.
I've had two other platies from the same tank die in similar circumstances over the last 3 months. The last one to die definitely had finrot, which I tried to treat with Waterlife Myxazin, to no avail. The one previous to that had no obvious injuries or signs of illness, it just stopped eating and died the same way as the others.
I'm at a loss what to do.
My tank is 10 Gallons, I now have 3 platy fry, about 4 months old, from the female that just died, 1 Bristlenosed catfish and about 5 weeks ago I added 6 Lemon Tetras. All of my other fish appear fine and healthy. I have live plants, a piece of bogwood, a 600lt per hour otto power filter, and aeration. The tank has been cycled for about 9 months. The platies were all added after the tank was cycled, and weren't yet mature when I got them. My water stats are 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrites and approx 5-10 Nitrates, using the API Master Test kit. PH is approx 6.6.
I do 25% water changes and vacuum the gravel once a week and rinse the filter media in tank water, if it's really messy.
Does anyone have any thoughts about what could be happening in my tank? I have another small tank and I've only lost 1 fish in 12 months, when I first set it up. Is it possible I have some kind of pathogen in the tank? It really breaks my heart to see my fish suffer.
Thanks guys,
Justin
