I was thinking something similar actually. Like, basicly the same stuff thats softer. Market vegetable sellers use it. But fish safe? Who knows.

thanks for all the replies everyone. I thought about it quite a bit and have decided to go with java moss instead...the popular opinion seems to be live plants are better in all ways. i'm sure i'll learn a thing or two in the process at the very least with live plants so i'll give it a shot...
