Plastic Bottom?

I am getting sand, and some medium size rocks in a couple days. I was told by a couple people to put something plastic down inside of the tank, because of the medium sized rocks could cause cracks. Does anyone know anything about this?

egg crate, mostly found on eBay, also a very good idea to distribute the weight of the rocks.
