what is needed to keep the most basic of plants? anything i get grows but dies and some of te leaves look like a caterpillar has been at them :(

The most basic two things you'll need is light and a source of carbon.  What are you tank dimensions, and what kind of light do you have on the tank?  Carbon can be carbon dioxide, or a liquid carbon source.  You'll need those two things to keep plants alive.  Plants need other nutrients to grow/thrive, but without light and carbon, they will starve.

There are many factors, but as stated above - light and carbon are the two most important.

The third factor that hasn't been mentioned yet is: Plant species.

What are your tank parameters, including light?
What plants have you tried?
