ok i bought some live plants a little to early last time and they didnt look so good so binned them and went with silk ones instead tbh i prefer the live as im sure everyone in here does

my question which are the hardiest plants that anybody can grow i have a sand substrate with nothing underneath

all im looking for is stuff like vallis and swords anybody have any ideas

any advice greatly appreciated

cheers howard

I have only just started with real plants and like you I only have a sand base, I have vallis in my tank which I have had about a month and it seems ok. I also have some java moss tied to a plant pot which I was told you can't kill if you tried.
Hope this helps

thanks dani did you you put the vallis in any kind of pot before you put it in the sand orjust bare roots and do you use any type of fertilizer and if so what?

i have a bare sand bottomed tank and some thriving plants it was a little hit and miss as to what took and what didn`t,

however you can get fert tabs that you just push into the sand underneath the plants and they feed em for 6 months or so....

and also java fern is supposed to be pretty hardy

and i recomend amazon swords as mine have lived through ph crashes, amonia spikes, nitrite spikes, nitrate through the roof, cold water warm water, snail infestations, and the plat is sending off runners

so it cant all be bad

I just pushed my vallis straight into the sand with bare roots and then bought some fert tabs. I was going to get an amazon sword plant next so I am glad to hear it grows ok in just sand.

Amazon swords, java ferns, java moss, anubias nana, some crypts, and water sprite are all great beginner plants. They don't have quite so high requirements as far as lighting and co2.

thanks all for that info was great shall be spending some time this week :hey: thanks again
