Mine are in no particular order

Hairgrass
Lilaeopsis brasiliensis, in fact all types of this genus

These two plants give me the most problems, hairgrass I have found just simply does not grow and ends up getting attacked by algae, liaeopsis again will not grow, it just remains absolutely static!

I guess the answer is more light, CO2 and macros. I toying with the idea of using both in my new setup but I'm not sure if I would just be wasting my time. I have in the past had huge problems trying to grow glosso in a carpet from but I actually feel I have cracked that now which for me has been a big achievement. I wish I could say the same for these other species.

What about you guys?

I personally found Lilaeopsis brasiliensis really easy to grow. I had it in a very small tank so light was optimal (there was only 16"x8"x8") and it was the temporary home of two goldfish (before I moved them into a much bigger tank) so they produced a lot of nutritious waste! I never used C02 and it only ever pearled very slightly, but it gre like nobody's business... just kept sprouting up with little runners.
I can never get any red plants to thrive in my tanks, but I know that's down to lack of light and C02 so I now stick to things I know I can grow!

hair grass and mosses how do i get them to grow!! how do i pin them down?

hairgrass :)

red plants...although I'm having more success recently but they aren't so red anymore :(

baby tears (hermianthus micranthenoids)...just doesn't seem to grow.

a few months ago and I would have said java moss. Be patient with the moss...I had no luck with it for ages, then suddenly it took hold and went from there.

Interestngly hermianthus micranthenoids has always grown really well for me, but I think it is better suited to smaller tanks, I have only grown it once from a few pots, they were tropica plants.

lozzles are you not wrapping the moss round a stone or piece of bogwood with cotton?

Used to have trouble with Cabomba, but I may try it again, now that I know what to do with lighting and CO2. The red form is really stunning, and would look awesome in a Dutch setup.

don't talk to me about plants, I have black thumbs
I can even kill amazon swords.

I do seem to be able to grow vallis and tiger lotus though :dunno:

everything in my tank grows like crazy!
....cept micro sword....not that it dies, it just never seems to do much :/

I've successfully grown around 20 species of plant now.

The only trouble I had was with Lobelia cardinalis and HM. At the time I only had 2 WPG and <20ppm CO2 with minimal nutrients (v. low NO3 and PO4).

I would like to say that I would be able to grow pretty much anything in my current set up - although ironically the majority of my plants are regarded as low-med light, undemanding plants (Java fern, Sag, Crinum). The only exception is the Glosso which is carpeting very nicely apparently (so Emily tells me!)

I would say with around 3 WPG good light, 30ppm stable CO2 and EI dosing then no plant should be any real trouble.

This is true, but liaeopsis I tend to find grows really slowly for me, its often been the most common foreground plant available in my LFS's and I have rarely seen e tenellus in these shops, which is my fave foreground plant.

microsword for me, dont get me wrong it grows really well and carpets nicely but since day one i have had thick clumps of algae all tangled up in it. the plant seems uneffected and grows perfectly but as soon as the algae is removed it grows back in 24 hrs isolated to that plant, nowhere else.

i never have worked out why so i ripped it all out last weekend.

nothing else has ever given me any real problems apart from hairgrass, it grows way too much and springs up in the wierdest of places where it really shouldn't be, way too envasive - thats getting the tug very soon...
