I was thinking about setting up a small tank to grow some plants for my main tank. Do I need to use a filter to keep the water flowing? I want to keep it very simple if I can.

Thanks

I would think so. Or do a lot of water changes to clean up the dead leaves and such. Some plants like water flow though such as Anubias Barterei (sp?) so you might need something.

Thanks. I do have a small filter that I could use for water flow. I might give it a try.

not only that, the water will start to stink realllllly bad... after just one night of me putting extra java moss in a bucket i woke up to an awefull smell.... so id keep a current

I never thought about the smell. I was also planning on growing some java moss.

it was so bad i had to throw away the java moss i was going to use and i dont really want any more java moss becuase the smell made me feel so sick... it was bad lol so yeah id deffinately keep some sort of current in there, even if it was just a powerhead or something

how odd, I've kept java moss in a small tank without a filter for a week, only did a water change twice, and it never smelt that bad.

You would be better off using the filter in my opinion, as it means less hassle with changing water everyday and shocking the plants too much with temperature differences.

What are your plans with growing java moss? On bogwood or something?

I'm not sure how I want to grow the moss yet. I've had the best results by wrapping it around driftwood, but I might give a moss wall a try.
