Hi
I have a betta splendens in a smallish tank with no filter or light. I wanted to get him some plant so he has more interest in his tank, but all I have in there at the moment are silk plants. I wondered if it was possible to have a live plant in there or not, in these conditions, or if it would just die.
Thanks in advance for any advice,
Kaida

It would die. Depending on what plant you have depends on how long it would take but without a light source all aquarium plants will eventually die.

If you have enough daylight present this may keep very low-light demanding plants alive for a good while i.e. Anubias species but too much natural light will cause algae blooms.

Hi Kadia,

I aslo started with a tank and only a few fish. Mine also has not extra light and the only pump is a small corner unit. Anyway I decided to try a live plant and to my surprise it worked. I pretty much go by trial and error playing about with my tank and get great joy out of it that way.

It would be great to communicate if you woul like to. you can get address under suricate from the members list and perhaps we can chat via MSN?

A java fern might survive without additional light, but it certainly wouldn't thrive or grow much.
