I have two Platy's, two Mollies and a Cory in a 30 gallon tank (36x12x18)... I'm planning on redoing the tank so Im not getting anymore fish until the tank is done. I wanted to put live plants in.....What plants would be good with live bearers? Also, would I have to add any supplements to help any plants?...and can I just plant them streight in the tank or should they be acclimated to it?

you can plant plants straight in but with some be aware that they might melt *look like they die* although they should come back, there just adapting to the water conditions

plants good for live breeders would be anything with lots of "fonds" something like moss or other types of plants, where its leaves are compact so the fry can hide in them...

as for any supplements, that depends on the plant and how much light it's getting. any supplements would help out. but in some cases in low light tanks there not required.

id recommend moss's i think there easy to keep and fry can hide in them and they can do well in lowlight... (i think dont quote me on it)

hope this helped =]

The Petsmart near me (The only place that sells plants other than the greenhouse) doesn't have Java moss, it does have Java Fern, but that's different :p I was thinking of getting Moneywart, Anacharus, and maybe Water Wisteria. (I'm just going by how easy the site says they are to care for) do people agree? they all pretty bushy, leaf plants

all of them plants which you named would do... personally iv not had any of them plants named but i have had similar ones like Indian fern rather than wisteria... i found them easy to grow

if you need plants try buying online. thats where i get most of mine from nowadays

Hi there

Livebearers such as your Mollies and Your platies will tend to eat some of your plants. I would go species such as Elodea, Cabomba Caroliniana, and Java Ferns, They shouldnt go near the Java Fern, but will have a nibble at the Cabomba, However this plant grows QUICK in low light, No Co2, No Fert Set ups so you will constantly be trimming the plant and will not notice the bite marks from the leaves
Cabomba is a super hardy plant and tends not too melt away, Neither does the java fern or elodea.

Java Mosses are also great for the Fry if they do have any :good: Once again should not Melt Away

I have had a poor success rate with Wysteria and always rots and dies with me if I plant in in Sand substrate. It can be left floating though which seems to do well :good:

Place Your plants straight into the tank, Some will melt, some wont, some will come back, some wont. Its trial and error really to see what comes back in your tank, and what you can support.

Are you intending to dose CO2, Ferts etc, High Lighting? Or going low tech and low budget with Low lighting (1-2WPG), NO Co2, Minimal Ferts

If you are going High Tech - You will need to does Ferts, Regularly, EI Dosing or a good All In One solution. You will also need a CO2 element some where.

Low Tech is easier, and great for your Mollies and Platys which are relatively Cheap. A dose of Ferts once a week is all you need. Something like API Leaf Zone for a basic fert.

Moneywort is a Moderate difficulty plant to grow and usually requires Moderate to High Lighting levels. It will be a background lant and likes a pH of 6.5-7.5. They can grow to a foot in length and will need a good Fert to thrive. If your new to Plants, I would start off simple with the cabomba, Java Fern, Vallis and Java moss, and get some success early, then look at more challenging plants :good:

Your best bet is probably some nice java moss. You can get a decent sample for next to nothing at your local fish club's next auction. If you attend a club auction, you may need to put a lock on your wallet or you will take home more than you should. A list of local clubs can be found here. Typically there will be a couple of auctions per year and it gives you a place to meet and talk to other fish people while picking up hard to find things like java moss.

or you can put a wanted or see the sales forums on this site or even ebay... they will be under £10 posted
