dunno what ya mean about the stick runner things on java fern!

but i asked for advice on fast growers for a new set up, pretty much all of these are easy to grow!

Whoever came up with that advise is spot-on IMO. Start a planted tank with 'weeds' to estabilish it.

Examples of what I reckon are Algae-Busting weed-like Plants
Ludwigia Repens
Brazilian Water Ivy
Small Ambulia
Mexican Oak Leaf
Water Sprite
Hornwort
Egeria Densa
Egeria Najas
Rotala Rotundifolia
Hygrophila Difformis
Hygrophila Polysperma
Bacopa Monneri
Bacopa Caroliana
Cabomba Carolina
Hydrocotyle Leucocephala
Limnophila Aquatica
Limnophila Sessiliflora
Limnophila Indicum
Myriophylum Aquaticum
Oh & don't forget Floating plants (careful they don’t block too much light)

and dont let the "weeds" bit put you off some weeds look pretty good!! ;0)

Yeh got a few of them already

am after a plant that looks like java fern. Had one but it had like little plantlets growing on the leaves. could just peel them off just don't want the hassle lol

Microsorum Pteropus "narrow"
I have that plant (or used to) and it grew 10x quicker than java fern plus it didnt send out as many new roots on the leaves.

My "narrows" (another variant of Java Fern, are they not?) are absolutely covered in plantlets.

I second the Bolbitis suggestion. I think Bolbitis heudelotii looks very nice although very slow growing.

Im sorry, it might just be me, BUT if you want good plants in your tank then you've got to look after them like you would your fish, everything you add affects your fish, if you want NO maintenence(?spelling) buy silk plants.

I've got a basic tank with basic lights and asked my LFS for low light plants, i'm now pruning a couple of them at least twice a month, and my fish love them.

That all well and good but my Java Fern was massive and hundreds of plantlets on the leafs.

A. I do not like the look of the leafs with the planlets on it even though the plant was well looked after and very healthy.

B. I Dont want to spends hours each week pulling every little single plantlets off each leaf. There is a shed-load of other plants in the 84.6USG tank that need maintained also Which I do on a weekly basis

Just as easy, maybe easier, than java fern is Cryptocoryne aponogetifolia. I picked some up in a club auction and they are now at least 3 feet long with a very nice broad leaf similar to the leaf on a java fern but it is also crinkled.
