We are thinking about having another go at planting our tank after an unsuccessful previous attempt.

I have just tested the water and its very hard. ie off the scale on a API GH/KH kit.

Ph is 8.5 and we have sand as a substrate.

Lighting is two 18w T8 tubes.

Tank size is 120 litres and mainly looking at background plants.

Can we expect to grow anything successfully in these conditions if so what would the experts recommend?

Most, if not all plants will adapt to different water conditions. If you're looking for background plants then have a look here...
