Hi,

I'm in the middle of setting up my 180ltr tank. I've put in a 1 inch layer of terralit and put about 1-2 inches of silver sand on top. I've also put some rocks and bog wood and now need to add some plants. Can anyone recommend some easy to grow plants suitable for sand that will require minimal care i.e. the odd prune or feed as I'm not very green fingered?! I was looking at Java Fern and Java Moss for the bogwood and Amazon swords and maybe Cabomba for the rear corners of the tanks. What are good plants for the foreground?

Thanks in advance.

I have been recommended small crypts such as wendeti (**spelling), and dwarf sagitaria/sagitaria sabultata..

Hope that helps.. Take a look at Aqua Essentials for buying or plantgeek for info..

Hope that helps.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I particularly the idea of "hard to kill" plants....!!!!!

I have a 84l tank with 30w lighting and gravel. All i do is add some plant gro each week and all my anubias plants are doing amazing - I cant reccomend them enough! I have anubia nana which has great leaves which my corys love to sit on (infact I see new leaves coming out the rhizo.. what ever it is all the time - what was a foreground plant is tanking over the tank!) and anubia afzelli again doing great. Java fern isnt growing much but looking healthy and kava moss - well its java moss I thin kit is impossible to kill it!

I have some indian fern on the way - so could be my first mishap!

what lighting have you got in your tank?

I made the mistake of not starting with lots of fast growers and am now paying the price!!

Hi,

The lighting is standard i.e. 2 x 30w 90cm tubes. The tank is a Rena Panorama 100, if that helps! I am not at home so don't know what type of tubes are fitted but I would have thought that would be enough to grow basic hardy plants?

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I've had a good look at plantgeek and picked out a few easy/very easy plants to start me off. What fertiliser do you recommend that can be used at water changes? Someone above mentioned 'Plant Gro', is it any good? I've heard that there are some issues with certain fertilisers and shrimps. I was planning on adding 2 or 3 cherry shrimps and don't want to kill them off with plant food!!!
