I've currently got a couple of amazone swords, a small java fern which I'm training to grow on a piece of bog wood and a few clumps of straight vallis.

I'm going to Maidenhead Aquatics in Basingstoke today to check it out, and was going to try and aquire some more java ferns and some java moss.

Thing is, the straight vallis doesn't seem too healthy. They get fed once a week and although it is growing new leaves, they don't seem to be a lush green colour and there's a lot of dying off. The amazons are growing new leaves also, but a lot of brown spots on existing leaves. I know these guys grow a leaf, then die back but I'm not sure how quickly.

My lighting is only 25 watts on a single strip which sits on the glass, but I was told by another LFS that this would be fine for the vallis and swords. They told me I needed 12hrs of light min per day, but another LFS said it was too much and should be more like 6hrs.

So, to cut a long story short (finally I hear you all say!), what other plants would be best, whats wrong with my vallis and how is my lighting level?

ammonia & nitrite 0, nitrates perfect for the tank, pH currently 7.5 but I've got hard water so it'll head back up again.

Cheers,
Ami

What is your tank size?

Anything bigger that around 10 Gallon with 25 Watts is too little for most plants - Vallis included.

What tube is it and do you use a reflector?

I would recommend around 2 Watts per Gallon of decent light with reflectors to grow Vallis and Swords. More light than this and CO2 addition will be needed.

Read my lighting article for more info - http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=96754

Hi ami,

Anubis nana would do well in your tank it can cope with low light and does better tied onto drift wood. It will also flower and has a lovely white flower which looks similar to that of the peace lily. Unfortunately whenever mine flower in my larger tank the clown loach eat the flowers.

Hope this helps

Emma
