I have play sand in my tank and am looking for finally get planted up again.

The last time I had plants they initially had large growth but they never rooted and were often pulled up by the fish/current and eventually melted away.

What do I do to avoid that this time? Or would I be able to plant them potted? Would they thrive in pots with fert gravel buried in sand?

You could use sand over another substrate as a cap. You could protect the roots with stones, or, as you say, you could bury some pots.

The old school approach was to bury peat squares under the sand, although they eventually make it to the surface. Effective though.

Won't sand always sink to the bottom though or mix?
