y'all

I have a low tech set up (i.e. no CO2) planted.

15Gal (68L) with 2W/Gal lighting.

My substrate consists of gravel with a bed of Laterite where I planned to plant. I may now add some potting soil (i.e. John Innes Loam-Based Compost No.2 - I read that somewhere probably a George Farmer post) :sly:

I already have:
1 large dominating Red Rubin Sword Plant (seems to be flourishing)
Amazon Sword (Not thriving, but then again, not dieing)
Green Cabomba - initially this grew like anything, but then about 3 weeks ago they all stopped growing & then when an off green colour, got very brittle and simply started dying off one by one. Wierd.

BGA took over my tank so I blacked out for 3 days and have now included a lighting siesta.

So I am now on a mission to get more plants in my tank so I am after some suggestions please - plants that preferrably stave of BGA would be a bonus.

I would Ideally like a carpeting plant as well.

Cheers,

Andy

You wont really get a carpeting plant with lower lihgt non co2 tanks.

i find that the chain sword plant is a great foreground plant that is doing great in my tank ... 10 gall with 1.7 wats per gal

In our 1.5 WPG No Co2 tank I've been able to grow Java Fern, Jungle Val, Amazon Sword and Dwarf Sag and Hornwort (although quite messy) with not problem.

I have not been able to keep Camboba, Corkscrew Val and Moneywort alive.

As far as carpeting plants, most of them need high lighting but if done properly Java Moss can look great as a carpeting plant. Here's a crappy pic of some of our Java moss attached to some slate (which you can't see at all). I have now split it up and within the next month hopefully the entire substrate of the tank should be covered in Java Moss covered slate:

I have also thought about trying Anubias nana out as a carpeting plant, i have heard it does alright in low/medium lighting --> http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Di....cfm?pCatId=815

Thanks so far everyone :good:

I've put my hand in my pocket (without the wife & sprogs seeing)....

I've purchased one of those Nutrafin CO2 Kit things.

So now I have a not-quite-so-lo-tech set up. :fun:

(when it arrives and I don't cock up the special forum DIY yeast witches brew formula).

I have 3 Amazon Sword in there (kind of just sitting there & not really taken off but seems OK).

The plant that HAS grown to mammoth proportions is my lovely Red Rubin (and that is despite the fact that some of it's leaves were covered in BGA that I am battling against)
