Good start asking here
.
To answer the question, we need to know what type of plant it is- just like fish they vary in care, some are incredibly easy, some take more effort, and some of the plants lfs's sell are impossibly because they are actually non-aquatic.
This is why people have mixed experiences with plants
.
But generally, to answer a few questions:
All plants need light, its best to buy species that match the lighting your tank already has. The type (colour temperature) of bulb is less important than how powerful it is.
Most plants are adaptable to different water stats, but some may require more nutrients in the form of fertiliser (and not all fertilisers are very useful).
The water temperature isnt usually critical, as long as its indoors.
Most fish are compatible, but some like silver dollars will eat them and lots of big things (like plecs) may accidentally uproot them.
So important things for us to know in order to advise you:
1) What type of plant is it (if you dont know, take a picture).
2)What size of tank do you have and what type and wattage of lighting do you have?
